Dia de Muertos. Day of the Dead. A time to remember, and celebrate, those who've gone on before us into the unknown. Watercolors in muted tones, adorned with marigolds- or cempasuchil - helped to bring this lovely woman to life. Or life after death. I wanted to acknowledge that there are Mexicans of African descent, whose presence is largely overlooked in images of this celebratory season, and also touch on my own mixed background: Black and Mexican. Straddling the two can be wonderful and challenging. As those who straddle the planes of life and afterlife during Dia de Muertos, coming to join us, however briefly, to be remembered and cherished.
